Friends to lovers, the wire we teeter on when navigating that particular relationship dichotomy, or another tug-of-war entirely: the one between motherhood and career. GRAMMY Award-nominated pop singer/songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen explores both concepts in her lead single “On Wires,” off her highly anticipated new album, Day & Night.
Set for release on September 18th, the 24-track double album unfolds across a single 24-hour period, a blurred, dreamlike sense of time where nights stretch into mornings and days dissolve into nights, creating the feeling of being suspended inside a moment. Within that cycle, “On Wires” lands during the daytime: a bright, raw track exuding organic warmth. Jepsen captures the exhilarating, impatient desire that surfaces in the early stages of courtship. She wrote the song with frequent collaborators Kyle Shearer, who also produced, and Nate Cyphert.
While the song itself captures a new relationship teetering between friendship and romance, the official video explores a different dichotomy: the tug-of-war between motherhood and career. Fighting to carve out space for both, Jepsen grabs a microphone and, its long cord trailing behind her, ventures out of a club and into the world. She shot the video in Los Angeles with director Caio Viera (KATSEYE) during her sixth month of pregnancy.
Day & Night will premiere when Carly headlines New York City’s All Things Go Festival on Sunday, September 27th. The album pushes further into sonic and emotional territory she’s hinted at before, offering a deeper, more intimate glimpse into her inner world, a space where emotion leads, boundaries fade, and Jepsen allows herself to exist fully without definition.
